If you\'re flying into Copenhagen with a rental EV booked, or you just picked up a Polestar from the dealer and you\'re planning your first long trip — relax. Range anxiety in Denmark is largely a solved problem in 2026. This is the honest version: the real range each car gives you, where the network still has gaps, and the one rule that ends most of the worrying.
The 30-second version
Denmark is small. 300 km gets you across the entire country east–west on the E20. Most EVs do that on a single charge, even in winter.
Chargers are dense. 1,800+ public DC fast chargers in 2026. Mainland: you\'re almost never more than 30 km from one. Largest gap on a main route is ~110 km.
Real range ≠ WLTP range. Subtract ~15% for normal mixed driving, ~25% for cold winter. Plan around the real number.
The 20-to-80% rule fixes most anxiety. Two short stops beat one long stop. Don\'t arrive on fumes, don\'t charge to full.
Three places still bite: the Vestjylland west coast, parts of inland Sjælland, and Bornholm. For everything else — trust the car.
Real range vs WLTP — by car model
WLTP numbers are achieved in a lab at 23 °C with the air conditioning off, on a rolling-road cycle that includes a lot of low-speed urban driving. The Danish E20 is not that. At 110 km/h on a flat motorway you actually do slightly better than WLTP because the cycle includes acceleration losses you don\'t pay on cruise. But add wind, hills, cold and city traffic and the number falls.

Numbers are my observed averages plus owner-forum consensus, not manufacturer claims. Conditions assumed: highway-biased driving, climate control on, 1–2 adults, normal tyre pressure. Aggressive driving and roof boxes drop these another 10–15%.
The pattern: at 110 km/h on flat Danish motorway, you get roughly WLTP minus 15% in summer. In winter, knock another 15–20% off that. A 530 km WLTP car is a 330 km winter car. That\'s still Copenhagen to Aalborg on a single charge — but it\'s not Copenhagen to Skagen without stopping.
The number on the screen is the only one that matters. Trust it more than the spec sheet.
Winter — what –25% actually feels like
Danish winter is mild by Nordic standards — most days hover between –5 and +5 °C, occasional dips to –10. But it\'s wet, it\'s windy, and the days are short. Range drops for three compound reasons:
Cold battery chemistry is less efficient — even before you turn anything on, a cold pack delivers fewer usable kWh.
Cabin heating is expensive. Heat pumps help (most modern EVs have them), but in deep cold the resistive backup kicks in and burns 2–4 kW continuously.
Higher rolling resistance. Cold rubber, wet roads, sometimes snow. Slows you down energetically.
Result: plan for –25% from a temperate baseline. Pre-condition the battery before fast-charging — every modern EV does this automatically if you set the charger as a navigation destination. Skip the precondition and you\'ll sit at a Supercharger watching 40 kW instead of 150.
The 20-to-80% rule
This is the rule that ends most range anxiety. Two facts about lithium batteries:
The first 10% from empty is slow. The car ramps up gently to protect the cells. You sit and watch 80 kW instead of 250.
The last 20% to full is slow. The car tapers off so you don\'t cook the cells. Going 80 → 100% can take as long as 20 → 80%.
So on a long trip, you don\'t charge to full and you don\'t arrive empty. You roll in at ~20%, you charge to ~60–80%, you leave. Two short 15-minute stops are faster than one 35-minute stop and far faster than one 50-minute "charge to full" stop.

The three routes where it still bites
The Danish charging map looks dense from a distance and is dense everywhere it counts — but there are three corridors where the spacing genuinely is wider, and a first-time driver should plan rather than improvise:
1. Vestjylland — the west coast back roads
From Hvide Sande north through Søndervig, Thorsminde and Thyborøn the fast-charger density drops noticeably. The coastal-tourism strip has destination chargers at most of the holiday-home rental hubs (Lalandia, Holmsland Klit, Henne Strand), but DC fast chargers between them are spaced 40–60 km apart on back roads — and a couple of the units on PlugShare are flagged as unreliable. Plan stops explicitly using ABRP, and add a PlugShare check the day before.
2. Inland Sjælland away from the motorway
The E20 (Copenhagen → Korsør) and E47 (Copenhagen → Rødbyhavn) are well covered. But the diagonal routes through Holbæk, Sorø and Næstved on the smaller roads have surprisingly thin fast-charger coverage in 2026. Most local journeys are fine on a normal-range EV that started the day at 80%, but a Copenhagen → southwestern Sjælland round trip in a tight-range car wants planning.
3. Bornholm
Bornholm is a 588 km² island in the Baltic with a permanent population of ~40,000. The fast-charging network is small — a handful of CCS chargers concentrated in Rønne, Allinge and Nexø, plus destination chargers at the larger hotels. Charge to 100% on the ferry side before you sail. On the island, plan one overnight slow-charge per night at your accommodation, top up at the Rønne CCS unit before catching the ferry home. The infrastructure works but it has zero redundancy — if the one Rønne fast charger is offline you wait or recharge slowly.

The mental shift after the first trip
Range anxiety is mostly a first-time problem. You bring a petrol-driver\'s model with you — "I must not run out of fuel" — and you map it onto a system that doesn\'t work that way. The petrol model says: fill up, drive until almost empty, fill up again. Twenty-minute uninterrupted stops every 600 km. That\'s not how an EV trip works.
An EV trip works in 200–400 km segments with 15–25 minute breaks woven in. The breaks aren\'t interrupting the drive — they\'re part of it. You eat. You stretch. You use the bathroom. You arrive at the hotel less tired than the petrol driver who power-drove eight hours straight.
Once you\'ve done one successful charging stop — once the car says "20 minutes to 80%" and 20 minutes later you\'re leaving — the anxiety just dissolves. By the second trip you forget you ever worried. By the fifth trip you actively prefer it.

Pre-condition the battery before fast-charging — every modern EV does this automatically if you navigate to the charger. Plan tighter routes December through February.
Can I drive Copenhagen to Aarhus on a single charge?
